Social Health Lab

The group: The Social Health Lab at the University of British Columbia conducts research to understand and improve social connectedness, well-being, and physical and mental health.
The idea: It plans to use a smartphone sensing application to predict sleep parameters solely from natural phone use and validate this approach against objectively assessed indicators of sleep quality. If successful, it will represent a new approach to sleep measurement that can support long-term, large-scale, population-level research on sleep. The concept could improve upon current public health surveillance because it is better suited for long-term and large-scale data collection than the sleep measures currently available to researchers.
