The group: The Ubiquitous Health Technology Lab (UbiLab) at the University of Waterloo designs, develops and evaluates technology that can be used with minimal burden to the user, providing maximum reliability and an outstanding user experience. UbiLab’s mission is to leverage wearable, Internet of Things and mobile health technologies for population-level surveillance.
The idea: Its project will explore the use of the zero-effort technology (ecobee’s smart thermostat) for population-level monitoring of physical activity, sedentary behaviour and sleep patterns at the household level. This will provide access to physical activity data at the minute level, in almost real-time, and with minimum data collection overhead. This infrastructure will enable public health officials to evaluate how different cities compare in terms of in-home activity levels, enabling them to structure more granular and targeted intercessions for different communities.
