Social Health Lab

The group: The Social Health Lab at the University of British Columbia conducts research to understand and improve social connectedness, well-being, and physical and mental health.
The idea: This project uses a smartphone app to predict important sleep parameters solely from natural phone use, and it validates this approach against objectivelyassessed indicators of sleep quality. In a preliminary sample of 30 participants, aged 18 to 49 and drawn from the general population in Vancouver, the app achieved a median accuracy of ±31 minutes for sleep onset, ±32 minutes for wake onset and ±32 minutes for total nighttime sleep. Prior research links these sleep parameters to numerous health outcomes. The research represents a new approach to sleep measurement that can support long-term, large-scale public health research.
